Conducting a 3 Beat Pattern

22 Aug 2012 Article

If you have a basic understanding of time signatures and note values, you can move on to some real conducting!

This is a basic 3 beat pattern.

It can be used effectively with 3/4, or a slower 6/8.

The method I'm demonstrating can be used effectively in a revival service or a worship setting. I've used it on buses, in nursing homes, with crowds of hundreds and with choirs of all sizes.

Pick a few songs and practice this beat pattern with those songs.

If you're just starting out, you ought to choose the songs you will use at least a day in advance and practice keeping time with your instrumentalist. A recording will work, you could even sing along, but your instrumentalist would be best!

God bless you & happy conducting!
